Oriental Coin Mystery

Show five white Chinese coins threaded onto a string with a red coin threaded at the bottom. A spectator holds both ends of the string. It seems impossible for the white coins to escape...yet that is exactly what happens: The spectator is still holding the ends of the string with the red coin threaded and the white coins completely free. Easy to do.
